We are so excited to announce our New DRAGONS Group for 6th grade and up at the Shambhala Center! DRAGONS will meet during Bodhi School on the first Sundays of the month, January through June, 10 am-12 pm.
Our new teachers, Gavin McKay and O’Mara Taylor, each bring something special to the DRAGONS. Take a moment to review each of their bios provided below. Gavin and O’Mara have much to share and will be complemented by the special gifts of our sangha members. This year the Dragons will explore:
o Art projects
o Discussion of applying Shambhala principles in every day teen life
o Improvisational theater (with Joe and Kris Stinson)
o Stress relief exercises and active listening (with Dr. Susanna Lack)
o Drala Exploration (with Michael Carroll)
o Protection Principle (with Kasung Joe Stinson)
o Much, much more!
DRAGON students should arrive at 10 am and register at the main desk. Please note that the younger class does not start until 10:15 am.
I have been a Philadelphia resident for 8 years and own a growing fitness and nutrition business for 6 of those. Prior to that, I was living in New York City as a business consultant after graduating from Cornell University in Engineering. The corporate world was not fulfilling to me so I traveled around the world and while in India was introduced to meditation, yoga and Buddhism. I am now completing the sacred path curriculum here at my spiritual home the Shambhala center. I am passionate about the need to reform and upgrade children's education with greater heart, muscle and mind and the Bodhi school is the perfect place to start.
I have been a member of the sangha my whole life. My father, Bob Taylor, joined the sangha in the 1980s, so I'm a dharma brat through and through. I have many childhood memories of running around Karme Choling and building gomden forts to my heart's content. I attended Family Camp for more than ten years and was a counselor/assistant teacher for the last four. I've led teen weekend retreats at Karme Choling, as well. I recently moved to Philadelphia after graduating from Vassar College in the spring, and I now work at an environmental consulting firm 30 minutes outside of Philly. I'm looking forward to getting to know the local sanga, connecting with this year's Dragons, and helping to nurture the community that was so valuable to me when I was a teen.
